I had a '98 for many years. Loved it. Still running, my brother is about to scrap it. Over 250K harsh new england miles and it's going to rust from the underside up, the subframe is already cracked through (partially my fault I'm sure). Plus supercharger!

That Riviera? Not as good as a '65, or a '71, but it could be had with the series II 3800 supercharged, which was a fucking gem of an engine if ever there was one. It also had an astonishingly good interior for the time:

Plus it looks good, in an Olds Aurora soap bar kind of way.

stock w/o the supercharger wasn't that quick but with supercharger had a lot of punch. Easily moddable engine. Put mine in the high 13s with a very mild cam, smaller supercharger pulley and some tuning. Transmission is a weak point if you build anything faster than 14s. It would easily go arrest-able speeds especially once the electronic limiter is programmed out.

I had one not too long ago. Was a surprise on woodward to be sure. Infiniti G35s could only keep pace. Most 4 cylinders would struggle unless they were built. Loved the damn thing to death until I couldn't source a fuel tank lock ring/seal so every time it rained I ended up with a tank full of water. Damn quick, damn luxurious, and damn fun.

Lies. The last gen riviera embodied everything the nameplate always stood for - luxurious, brand leading design, powerful motor, and effortless GT handling. Not a canyon carver by any means but it was far from awful to drive. Keep the speeds and revs low during the twisties and it was quite competent. Then stomp the throttle on straights and let the supercharger boost you away. I fail to see how a few cut corners should detract from the fact that the lat riviera was probably the first return to proper form since the boat tail for the nameplate. If the Riviera name had to die, that was the car to go out on.

I KNEW YOU WOULD BE HERE! NOW GET OUT OF HERE!

The SC300 is for people who want to put leather in their supra. The Riviera is for people who just want to drive a damn leather recliner and have it not suck. Rivis will never "corner" as good as an SC but the SC itself isn't the best handler in the world. If you want to boost one up for drift shenanigans, the SC is the way to go. But for a proper GT experience, my old Riviera had way more arm and leg room than any car I've ever been in and it really did NOT suck at handling like you would think a big boat like that would. Hell, I moved the front seat forward, reclined it all the way back so the top met up with the rear seat and was able to have no-compromise sex with my girlfriend in college.

Oh, the Riviera had a fair share of leather. And had that amazing wrap-around dash. Yes, the accountants sunk their teeth into that dash as hard as they could, but the ride was sublime, the seats were amazing (just.....just don't autocross it.....Not the most bolstered seat in the world, if I'm honest) and the chassis is legendary at GM as it broke their frame crusher. Oh and FWD is superior for all-weather traction. Let's be real here - The riviera is something like 3 zip codes long, Yes you can fit 4 people in the back with ease (record was 8 people in the car total) but it makes the limit handling of the car a bit relaxed. I don't think RWD would've magically made it much better unless they replaced the air suspension in the back with a different setup and then you lose that whole "My buick actually does a decent impression of a benz" feeling over speed bumps and the like.

Lexus SC300/400. The 300 came with a 2JZ (optional manual too) and the 400, as YSI has said, came with the 1UZ V8. Chassis was from the Supra, so it actually handled (and you can bolt on Supra parts). Unlike the Riv, which I imagine just floats places.

From what I read it was as good as a Merc SL and almost as good as a BMW 8-series, but for way, way less. So much less in fact, it was only a little more than the Riv, which has no chance against a SL.

I got my 400 for stupid cheap and had a ton of fun it.

As a former owner of a similar vintage monte carlo and riviera.......HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no. The lolcar was marginally better at handling but that had more to do with the lighter weight and the fact that the 3.1 would rev to almost 7k (redline was 6400 so I have no clue why it would do that) so you could do some malarky on the autocross with engine braking in "2nd". Other than that, the Riv was superior in every way. And maybe you should've been driving a FWD car. Then maybe you wouldn't have ended up a meme of your own on here.

Kinja'd!!!

But you can deny it all you want, the riviera is a true battlecruiser for the road. Old school, boat-like dimensions but it actually takes turns at mid speed okay......I can't say it "handles" with a straight face but it really doesn't plow like you'd expect a FWD car would. Now the monte...........yeah that's classic nose heavy FWD plow right there baby! Riviera? No way. And it has easy hot rod potential. Slap a smaller pulley on the supercharger, flash the ECU, new injectors and ignition system, and BAM! 350+ hp and enough torque to yank a skyscraper off its foundation. But don,t take my word for it - let's let the fine folks at Buick tell you why buick riviera is superior to the lexus SC with this handy training video!

Did you even watch that video!? It was like a horrible Hyandai equus video. "But its cheaper and has more rear room!!" Which is super important in a 2 door.

Not to mention they ignored the fact that the SC400 exists. That made 260hp in '96 and then 290hp (& 300lbft) in '98.

ALSO WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS ABOUT MY SC. I bought that car as a cheap beater to drift! That was the whole point of it, and it lasted two years in my hands with drifting all the damn time. I'd count that as a win.

Want a lift in my Riviera? It has 8-way power adjustable passenger seats and class leading legroom! Riviera also has classic styling cues such as wrap around dashboard and full width tail light! Potential customers such as yourself will appreciate Riviera's self leveling rear suspension, a feature NOT found on rivals such as Lexus SC and Acura CL. Lincoln MkVIII has rear air suspension but the V8 is thirstier and rear seat room is limited. Potential buyers of the Riviera want to know that their passengers experience as much comfort as the driver.

.....Seriously, buick salesmen in the 90s must have been the WORST people to sit next to at a dinner party.

Gets worse. The riviera and aurora are based off the same platform. Apparently olds and buick would each get ONE. So oldsmobile claimed the sedan and buick got stuck with the coupe. But the thing is, both of them apparently wanted both. According to my mom, what was happening was they were trying to figure out how to make enough sedans and coupes for both to get their fill. But there wasn't enough plant capacity and labor force capable of making these cars. So early on, the limit was harshly enforced. I think that's why buick left the chassis with so much interior space - it was effectively a 2-door sedan inside. Seriously, sit in the back of one. I'm over 6 foot and I love it back there. There is as much space in the back of a riviera as there is in the front of my fiesta.
